“NEIGRIHMS Shillong Opens B.Sc. Nursing Admissions for 2024-25 Through NEET-UG”

The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong has recently unveiled a pivotal change in its admission procedure for the B.Sc. Nursing course for the 2024-25 academic year. According to the latest notification from the institution, aspiring students looking to join the College of Nursing at NEIGRIHMS will now have to pass the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduate (NEET-UG), overseen by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

This development represents a significant shift from the institute’s prior policy. Until now, NEIGRIHMS conducted its own entrance exam to select candidates for its B.Sc. Nursing program. Moving forward, however, the selection process will rely exclusively on the candidates’ performance in the NEET-UG exam.

The decision to integrate the NEET-UG scores for B.Sc. Nursing admissions aligns NEIGRIHMS with a standardized national framework for medical and allied health sciences education, ensuring a unified criterion for assessing applicants’ eligibility and merit. This change underscores the institute’s commitment to maintaining high academic and professional standards in nursing education.

Kerala to Introduce Entrance Exam for B.Sc Nursing Admissions: A New Era for Aspiring Nurses

In a significant move aimed at streamlining the process of admission to B.Sc nursing courses in Kerala, the state government has decided to introduce an entrance examination starting this year. Health Minister Veena George announced the decision, highlighting that the move comes after extensive discussions and deliberations on the need to ensure a standardized admission process for nursing aspirants in the state.

This new development marks a shift from the previous admission procedures, aiming to bring about uniformity and fairness in the selection process. The decision is in line with the directives issued by the Indian Nursing Council (INC), which, over the past three years, has consistently urged all states to implement an entrance examination for B.Sc nursing admissions. The INC’s directive aims to enhance the quality of nursing education and ensure that the most capable and deserving candidates are granted admission.

The Kerala government is currently in the throes of deciding who will bear the responsibility of conducting the examination. The two bodies being considered are the LBS Centre for Science and Technology and the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations of Kerala. A comprehensive discussion is set to take place soon, focusing on finalizing the details of the entrance examination, including the syllabus and examination structure.

Health Minister Veena George emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing the entrance exam efficiently and transparently. “We are dedicated to ensuring that the examination process is conducted smoothly, with the utmost transparency and fairness. Our goal is to finalize the examination details swiftly so that we can proceed with the admissions process without delay,” said Minister George.

The introduction of the entrance examination has been met with mixed reactions. While many see it as a positive step towards enhancing the quality and competitiveness of nursing education in Kerala, some private college managements have expressed concerns. They have issued warnings stating that the proposed entrance examination could disrupt the field admission process and have hinted at the possibility of discontinuing admissions if the exam is implemented.

Despite the concerns raised, the government has set a timeline for the admission process. As per the announcement, the B.Sc nursing admission process is scheduled to commence on August 1st, with the aim to complete it by September 30th. This tight schedule underscores the government’s intention to adhere to the INC’s directives while ensuring that the academic year is not disrupted.

The introduction of the entrance examination for B.Sc nursing admissions in Kerala is a landmark decision, reflecting the state’s commitment to elevating the standard of nursing education and making the admission process more competitive and merit-based. As the government and relevant authorities work out the details, aspirants and institutions alike await further announcements with bated breath, hoping for a smooth transition to the new system.

AIIMS Issues Ultimatum to Nurses for Registration with Delhi Nursing Council

NEW DELHI :- In a recent development, AIIMS, New Delhi, has issued a stern ultimatum to its nursing staff regarding registration with the Delhi Nursing Council (DNC). The directive, conveyed through an official order on Tuesday, emphasizes that failure to comply within one month will result in strict disciplinary actions.

The order mandates that all nursing staff at AIIMS, New Delhi, must register themselves with the DNC upon joining and ensure timely renewal of their registration thereafter. Non-compliance will lead to consequences, as stated in the circular. The institute has underscored the importance of valid and renewed registration for all nursing staff and pharmacists.

This move by AIIMS follows earlier objections raised by the nurses’ association, which contested the necessity of mandatory registration with the DNC, especially if nurses are already registered with nursing councils in their respective home states.

In response to these objections, AIIMS clarified its stance in the order. Citing the Indian Nursing Council’s regulations from 2019, AIIMS emphasized that registered nurses, auxiliary nurse midwives, and lady health visitors are required to obtain reciprocal registration when transitioning between state nursing councils. This clarification aims to address any confusion regarding the registration requirements for nurses at AIIMS.

However, the directive has sparked dissent among some members of the nursing community. The president of the AIIMS nurses union raised concerns, citing a potential violation of a Supreme Court order. They highlighted the plight of experienced nurses who have served at the institute for over three decades, expressing apprehension that these nurses may not meet the educational requirements mandated by the Delhi Nursing Council.

The conflicting viewpoints underscore the complexity of regulatory compliance within the healthcare sector. While AIIMS aims to align its practices with prevailing regulations, concerns about the practical implications for long-serving nurses raise pertinent questions about balancing regulatory standards with recognition of experience and expertise.

As the deadline approaches, it remains to be seen how stakeholders navigate these challenges and whether a resolution that addresses both regulatory compliance and the concerns of experienced nursing staff can be reached.
